For more than 12 years, I’ve had the privilege of matching puppies with families across the country. While we’re located in Idaho, many of our puppies have gone to homes throughout New York, where they have become cherished family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

One of the questions I hear most often is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“How much of my puppy’s personality is genetic?”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

My answer is always the same:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genetics matter, but they are only part of the story.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I plan a litter, I spend years selecting parents with wonderful temperaments, outstanding health testing, and calm, loving personalities. I believe good breeding gives every puppy the best possible start. However, what happens during those first weeks and months after birth is just as important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve watched this play out over hundreds of puppies. Even puppies raised together in the same litter can grow<\/a> into different adults depending on the experiences they have once they join their new families. That’s why I put so much emphasis on early development before my puppies ever leave my home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the time they are born, my goal is to help each puppy see the world as a safe and exciting place. They experience normal household sounds, gentle handling, new textures, different surfaces, and lots of positive interactions with people. Every experience is designed to build confidence instead of fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that socialization isn’t about taking a puppy everywhere or introducing them to hundreds of people. It is about making sure each new experience is positive. A puppy who calmly explores something new and walks away feeling successful gains confidence that will stay with them for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When my New York families bring their puppies home, I encourage them to continue what we’ve started. Every walk through the neighborhood, every ride in the car, every visitor at the front door, and every trip to the veterinarian becomes another opportunity to help their puppy grow into a calm, confident adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also encourage families to let their puppies explore at their own pace. Puppies, just like children, build confidence when they are allowed to investigate something new without feeling pressured. A little patience goes a long way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positive reinforcement has always been a big part of how I raise my puppies. Rewarding the behaviors we want creates dogs that enjoy learning and trust the people around them. I want every puppy to believe that training is fun and that their family is someone they can always look to for guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is hearing from families years later. They tell me their puppy has become the dog they always hoped for. Many say their dog is calm in public, gentle with children, friendly with visitors, and eager to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While every dog is unique, I believe those results come from combining careful breeding with thoughtful early experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no such thing as a perfect puppy, and every dog continues learning throughout life. But I truly believe those first weeks matter. As a breeder, I take that responsibility seriously because my job isn’t simply to raise puppies. My job is to give every family the very best start possible with a healthy, confident companion who will be part of their lives for many years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
